Mount Utsayantha Project Meetings

April 26, 2005

The following is a quick recap of what was discussed at our last Mt. U project meeting held on April 26th.     Mayor Waylen Bray reported that the Village had received $9,435.47 in local donations toward the project to date, plus a $30,000 member item from Senator Bonacic for the park.   Waylen indicated he would follow up with Shirley from the O’Connor Foundation regarding the $5,000 grant as he wasn’t sure if the money had been received or the proper paperwork provided to release the funds.

Jim Kopp reported that he had visited the site recently with an electrician.   He estimates it would cost roughly $1,850 to underground an electric line from the closest pole to the building if the Village digs the trench.    Waylen also reported that he had spoken to NYSEG about undergrounding the lines from the hangliders launch.

According to Jim, progress on ordering the shingles for the roof has been slow.   He needs to get a hard copy of the catalog to get specifics on the materials, but he estimates it will cost at least $3,000 for just the shingles, plus additional for the valleys, fasteners, etc.     Jim also provided information on the roll down window guards discussed at the last meeting.   He distributed some product samples and indicated that he will measure all of the window openings and FAX them to the company for pricing.

Aree Bray reported on his research on security cameras and indicated he would get more information and pricing for the next meeting.   He also indicated that he was recently contacted by WAMC for a radio piece on the trail system.

The group decided to officially re-open the fire tower at a ribbon cutting ceremony to be held the afternoon of Saturday, July 2nd.   Details will be worked out, but Jim Kopp indicated he would work with Waylen  to find a local vendor who could manufacture the plaques for each step and landing.   Kevin Prior also indicated he would follow up with Marty Podskoch re: the painting that needs to be done, was well as the windows and installing a safety rail next to the opening in the cab.

The last item discussed was a proposal from Riverhill Associates (Linda Norris) to prepare an exhibit design plan for the site and observation building.   Waylen and the committee agreed that the funds on hand could be used to hire someone to prepare the exhibit plan and design the exhibits, but it should probably be put out for a competitive bid.

We will meet again sometime in June – date to be announced.

Cheers!
Helen
